Gleaners chief: Nonprofit employees embrace technology

www.michigannonprofit.com, 07/15/2003

Employees at nonprofit organizations will embrace technology every bit as quickly as those in the private sector, if given a chance, according to the president of one of the area's largest nonprofits.Agosthinho "Augie" Fernandes Jr., president of Gleaners Community Food Bank of Metro Detroit, told the 2003 Nonprofit Technology Summit on Tuesday that Gleaners' 40 employees have readily adopted a new wireless food-management system that lets the organization track food.Gleaners, which distributes more than 25 million pounds of food a year to 300 nonprofit agencies, allows the organization to operate more efficiently with a minimal investment in time and money."Your people will rise to technology," Fernandes told representatives from about 80 nonprofit agencies who attended the summit at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. The summit was sponsored by Detroit-based NPower Michigan and funded by the SBC Excelerator grant program, operated by the SBC Foundation. The SBC Foundation is the charitable arm of San Antonion-based SBC Communications Inc.Fernandes' speech, titled "Control-Alt-Delete: Reboot Your Organization," offered tips for nonprofits thinking about dipping into new technology.Fernandes suggested that nonprofits ensure that software has the proper licenses and fits agencies' needs. Improper software, including that brought in by employees, can damage a computer system, he said. Furthermore, programs running without licenses can bring legal problems.Fernandes also recommended that nonprofits spend a portion of their technology money on memory for computers and to make the most of collaboration features many programs offer."You have to have a plan for technology," he said. "It can't be sporadic."
