Virus Vaccination Day 2004: Volunteers and Agencies Unite to Improve Virus Protection

Volunteers and agency coordinators are briefed on the day's events during the opening session of Virus Vaccination Day in Grand Rapids.

"Thank you for the opportunity to help. I wish that we did this much more often!!"  This was a response from one of the volunteers who participated in NPower's Virus Vaccination Day in December of 2004.  Volunteers made a great impact on nonprofit community - they helped 26 nonprofits in the greater Detroit and Grand Rapids areas remove viruses from their computers during Virus Vaccination Day.  Not only were 600 threats uncovered and destroyed, but also 300 software licenses were installed.  Since many agencies do not follow best practices in updating their virus protection software and scanning regularly nor do they have the skilled staff and funding to support security, the donated software and time were desperately needed and appreciated.

What did the volunteers do?  The volunteers installed the software, scanned for viruses, and updated virus definitions.  At the end of the day, they ended their work by summarizing what they accomplished and left behind instructions of what the agency needed to do to remain up-to-date and sheltered from viruses. The 40+ volunteers knew they had made an impact - every nonprofit responding to the evaluations reported that their volunteers provided a valuable service.  One nonprofit coordinator put it best, "Excellent help! It couldn't have come at a better time. A topic that strikes fear in my heart was laid to rest!"
