Tech Inventory Day 2006

Volunteers and agency staff inventory lab computers at True Love Christian Ministries during Tech Inventory Day 2006.

In order to plan for technology, you need to know where you are starting from.  This was the purpose of Tech Inventory Day 2006.

On April 28, NPower Michigan teamed up with New Detroit and close to 40 volunteers to help nearly 30 nonprofit agencies strategically plan for technology during our Day of Service, Tech Inventory Day 2006.  Andy Wolber, our Executive Director explains,"Our goal is to help these organizations determine what technology they already have in place and what it can do to help them accomplish their missions, and the Technology Inventory Day is a crucial element to identifying these needs."

And we did!  Over 120 computers were inventoried and 25 organizations' technology needs assessed.

One agency said, "Tech Inventory Day will give our organization the opportunity to revamp and build our technology to become competitive and more efficient." How can it do this?  A technology inventory can be have these types of results when used for the right purposes - reporting to their insurance company, writing grant needs, developing a technology plan, and more.  A technology inventory can serve as the starting point for nonprofits with any project and in this case, it is their technology planning program with NPower Michigan.

Because of the success of Tech Inventory Day with the starting point for each of these agencies established, the nonprofits are ready for the series of planning workshops and onsite consultant visits where they will gain technical knowledge, best practices, and tools to develop their technology plans.  Without Tech Inventory Day, our volunteers, and the utilization of TechAtlas (NPower's online planning tool) to gather the data, this process would have been time consuming to gather the information and nearly impossible to keep updated.

This success would not have been possible without our sponsors and volunteers. Many thanks go out to our sponsor and event host, Microsoft Corporation.  They made this day happen through their donation of space and food.  We are also grateful for the in-kind donations from Airfoil Public Relations, for their publicity expertise, and Tom Lombardi, our event photographer.  Lastly, we would also like to thank all of the local organizations that provided volunteers and the time off to participate.

Tech Inventory Day 2006 - what a great Day of Service!
